Kenan Yildiz playing through knee pain for Juventus' Champions League push
Juventus forward Kenan Yildiz is managing a persistent knee inflammation as he prioritises the club's season-ending objectives over his impending World Cup participation with Turkey this summer. The 21-year-old has been a near-ever-present for manager Luciano Spalletti, featuring for over 3,400 minutes this season and leading the team's scoring charts with 11 goals, despite the physical issue.
According to reports from Italy, Yildiz has been dealing with a tendinopathy—an inflammation of the tendon below the kneecap caused by overload—for several months. The problem has visibly required strapping and has periodically limited his performances. Spalletti confirmed the player had to train at a reduced level this week due to the inflammation, a issue that also kept him out of a match back in November.
Yildiz's commitment has been total since the schedule intensified in mid-January. Of a possible 1,560 minutes across all competitions, he has played 1,282, missing only one full match and starting all but one of the 17 games. His importance was highlighted in a recent match against Atalanta, where a single moment of quality in creating a chance demonstrated his potential match-winning influence even when not at full fitness.
The club's plan for the final weeks of the Serie A campaign is to manage the condition through tailored training. This will involve increased rest during the week and a reduction in his workload in sessions, aiming to keep him available for selection as Juventus battles to secure qualification for next season's Champions League. The Turkish national team, which will feature in its first World Cup since 2002, is therefore a secondary concern for the player in the immediate term.
Yildiz joined Juventus from Bayern Munich's youth academy in 2022 and broke into the first team this season, quickly becoming an indispensable figure. His current situation underscores the physical demands on young players in a congested calendar, balancing club duties with major international tournaments. For Juventus, his availability could be crucial in securing a top-four finish, with the club currently locked in a tight race for Champions League positions.
