Manchester United Set to Approach Julian Nagelsmann for Manager Role
Manchester United are preparing to open formal talks with Germany head coach Julian Nagelsmann as they consider their options for a permanent manager this summer, according to a report from GiveMeSport. The club's hierarchy is set to approach the 38-year-old this month, with Nagelsmann reportedly keen on a return to club football after the 2026 World Cup. Current interim boss Michael Carrick remains the favourite for the role, but the club's interest in Nagelsmann signals a potential alternative path.
United's plans have accelerated following a 2-1 defeat to Leeds United this week, a result that has dented Carrick's previously strong position. The loss leaves United vulnerable in the race for Champions League qualification, currently sitting third but at risk of falling to fifth depending on weekend results. The club's leadership is now actively exploring external candidates, with Nagelsmann identified as a leading target should they decide against appointing Carrick on a full-time basis.
Nagelsmann, who became the youngest manager in Bundesliga history when he took charge of Hoffenheim at 28, has a significant pedigree in club football. Before accepting the Germany national team role in 2023, he managed Bayern Munich and RB Leipzig, winning the Bundesliga with Bayern. His tenure with Germany saw a run to the Euro 2024 quarter-finals, where they were eliminated by eventual champions Spain. His contract with the German football association (DFB) runs through the World Cup, but a release clause is believed to be manageable for a club of United's stature.
For Nagelsmann, the project at Old Trafford represents a chance to lead one of the world's most prominent clubs and test himself in the Premier League for the first time. For United, he offers a proven, modern tactical philosophy and experience at the highest level of European club competition, having reached a Champions League semi-final with RB Leipzig. His appointment would mark a clear shift towards a defined, progressive style of play, a direction often cited as a priority for the club's new sporting leadership.
Despite the external interest, club legend Roy Keane, speaking on Sky Sports, suggested Carrick is still in pole position. Keane stated that if Carrick can finish the season strongly, particularly in key fixtures against Chelsea and Liverpool, it will make it "very difficult" for the club to look elsewhere. He noted that the real tests of recruitment and managing pressure would come next season, but acknowledged Carrick is currently "in the driving seat."
The coming weeks will be crucial in determining the direction of the club. United's final league position and performance in their remaining matches will heavily influence the decision. An approach for Nagelsmann does not preclude Carrick's appointment, but it establishes a credible, high-profile alternative as the club conducts its due diligence. The managerial decision will set the tone for a pivotal summer transfer window as United aim to close the gap on the Premier League's top sides.
