Franck Kessié is officially a free agent after Al Ahli released him, making him one of the most intriguing players on the transfer market. The Saudi Arabian club expressed their gratitude for his three years of service, but Kessié now seeks a return to European football without a transfer fee attached.
Concerns about a potential decline in form after his time in Saudi Arabia were dispelled by his performances at the recent World Cup with Ivory Coast. At 29 years old, Kessié is at the peak of his athletic abilities and appears to have refined his attacking instincts, improving his ability to make late runs into the opposition box. His personality has never been in question.
The primary obstacle to a deal is Kessié’s previous wage, earning €14 million net per season in Saudi Arabia, a figure few European clubs are willing to match. However, his agent, George Atangana, who is expected in Milan to discuss options, has indicated a willingness to negotiate more reasonable terms, particularly given Kessié has earned approximately €50 million net across his spells with Barcelona and Al Ahli.
Juventus has emerged as a strong suitor, with Kessié himself acknowledging ongoing discussions. He stated, “Juventus? Yes, we’re talking. I’ve seen it. They’re a great opportunity. In form, at the World Cup and now a free agent, you couldn’t ask for more! That’s why many want me, and they’re right. My agent is working, there are many calls, and it’s normal: I would also take myself in these physical and economic conditions.” Juventus has reportedly offered a three-year contract worth around €5 million per season, with an option for an additional year.
Roma also has expressed interest, but financial constraints and the need to trim their midfield could complicate a deal. Juventus is also working on outgoings, specifically attempting to sell Khephren Thuram to Premier League clubs like Manchester United, Liverpool, and Nottingham Forest for a reported €50 million, which would free up funds and a squad space for Kessié. The sale of Thuram could also help finance a move for another midfield target, Stanislav Lobotka from Napoli, though Napoli is reluctant to sell and would demand between €30-35 million for the Slovakian international.
Ultimately, Juventus aims to balance departures and arrivals to provide coach Spalletti with experienced and youthful options in midfield.
