Bayern Munich midfielder Joshua Kimmich has revealed he was seriously considering a move to Paris Saint-Germain last summer, feeling a lack of support from his club at the time. The Germany international disclosed in an interview with ZDF that he was prepared to leave the Allianz Arena and that Bayern were receptive to the possibility of a transfer.
Kimmich stated that discussions with Bayern’s sporting director Max Eberl confirmed the club’s willingness to sell him should he express a desire to depart. Eberl reportedly told Kimmich he was “for sale” if he wanted to leave, contributing to the player’s uncertainty about his future. This lack of clear commitment from Bayern led Kimmich to explore other options, with PSG emerging as a strong contender.
The 29-year-old described a strong interest from PSG, praising the efforts of sporting director Luis Campos and head coach Luis Enrique in convincing him of his importance to the project. He noted the club’s significant financial offer, calling it “incredible,” but emphasized that the decision wasn’t solely based on monetary factors. Kimmich also highlighted the importance of considering his family when making such a significant career choice.
Ultimately, Kimmich opted to remain at Bayern, signing a contract extension that will keep him with the Bundesliga champions until 2029. He credited the trust shown by new Bayern manager Vincent Kompany as a key factor in his decision, stating he had “never felt such a great deal of trust.” Kimmich has been a mainstay in Bayern’s midfield since joining from RB Leipzig in 2015, becoming a crucial player for both club and country. He has won seven Bundesliga titles and a Champions League trophy with Bayern.
The revelation sheds light on a period of uncertainty surrounding one of football’s top midfielders, and highlights the importance of player-club relationships in retaining key talent. Kimmich’s continued presence at Bayern provides stability to their midfield and strengthens their ambitions in both domestic and European competitions.
