The German Football Association (DFB) has confirmed it has reached an understanding with Jürgen Klopp regarding the key terms of a potential contract to become the new head coach of the German national team. The news follows reports from Sky Germany that an agreement in principle, extending to 2030, had been reached between the parties.
DFB President Bernd Neuendorf and Vice President Hans-Joachim Watzke met with Klopp in New York for initial discussions on Tuesday, with the DFB describing the conversations as “constructive.” The association stated that while key terms have been agreed upon, finalising the appointment is contingent on reaching an agreement with Klopp’s current employer, Red Bull.
Klopp currently holds the position of Head of Global Soccer at Red Bull, a role he took on after departing Liverpool at the end of the 2023-24 Premier League season. He ended a nine-year tenure at Anfield with a League Cup triumph, but Liverpool finished third in the league and were eliminated from the Europa League quarter-finals. Securing his release from Red Bull is not anticipated to present a significant obstacle, according to the DFB.
The Germany national team is currently without a permanent head coach following the dismissal of Julian Nagelsmann after a shock round of 32 exit to Paraguay at the recent World Cup. Nagelsmann had been appointed in September 2023, replacing Hansi Flick, but his tenure proved short-lived amid disappointing results. The DFB are now hoping Klopp, a highly respected and successful manager, can revitalise the national team.
Any final agreement will require approval from a joint meeting of the Supervisory Board and the Shareholders' Assembly of DFB GmbH & Co. KG. Further talks are scheduled to take place next week, with both the DFB and Klopp’s representatives expressing confidence that a successful conclusion can be reached. Klopp’s potential appointment could signal a new era for German football, leveraging his experience and tactical acumen to rebuild the national squad.
