Liverpool made a significant attempt to sign Kylian Mbappé while he was at AS Monaco, according to comments made by former manager Jürgen Klopp. Speaking to Magenta TV during coverage of France’s victory over Morocco, Klopp detailed the lengths the club went to in order to secure the young forward’s signature.
Klopp explained that Liverpool offered a private jet to transport Mbappé and his family for discussions, indicating a serious and comprehensive effort to persuade him to join. Despite these efforts, Mbappé ultimately chose to sign for Paris Saint-Germain, a decision Klopp acknowledged with a hint of regret. The timeline places this pursuit around the 2016-2017 season, a period where Mbappé was beginning to establish himself as a world-class talent.
At Monaco, Mbappé quickly gained recognition for his explosive pace and clinical finishing, notably scoring a brace against Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League. He followed this up with two goals across both legs of Monaco’s Champions League tie against Manchester City, further solidifying his reputation as one of Europe’s most promising young players. These performances attracted attention from several top clubs across the continent.
Mbappé’s eventual move to PSG in 2017 has seen him become one of the most prolific goalscorers in European football, winning numerous league titles and domestic cups. He has also become a key player for the French national team, reaching the World Cup final in 2022. Had he chosen to join Liverpool, the landscape of both the Premier League and European football could have been dramatically different, potentially altering the club's attacking dynamic and challenging for major honours in a new way.
