Jürgen Klopp is poised to take over as the head coach of the German national team, with a deal nearing completion according to the German Football Association. Talks between the DFB and Klopp’s current employer, Red Bull, have progressed to the point where a full agreement is anticipated shortly. A DFB official confirmed to German news agency SID that “We're on the home stretch.”
Klopp will succeed Julian Nagelsmann, who was appointed in September 2023 following the dismissal of Hansi Flick. Nagelsmann’s tenure, while showing promise, ultimately fell short of expectations, and the DFB have moved to secure a manager with a proven track record on the international stage. The appointment represents a significant shift for the DFB, bringing in a coach renowned for his energetic leadership and tactical flexibility.
Currently, Klopp holds the position of Head of Global Soccer with Red Bull, a role he assumed after departing Liverpool at the end of the 2023-24 Premier League season. He is under contract with the company until 2029, necessitating negotiations to release him from his existing commitments. Klopp enjoyed a hugely successful nine-year spell at Liverpool, transforming the club into a European powerhouse and winning the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, and League Cup.
It is understood that Klopp is expected to sign a contract that will see him lead Germany through to the 2030 World Cup, which will be co-hosted by Germany, Canada, and Mexico. This long-term commitment signals the DFB’s faith in Klopp’s ability to rebuild the national team and challenge for major honours. Germany are hosting the Euro 2024 tournament this summer, and while Klopp is expected to be involved in some capacity, his full influence will likely be felt from the start of the World Cup qualifying campaign. The appointment of Klopp is expected to galvanize the German national team and restore a sense of optimism among supporters.
