Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo has committed his long-term future to the club by signing a new five-year contract, the club has confirmed. The new deal extends the academy graduate's stay at Old Trafford until June 2031 and includes a significant salary increase, rewarding his return to prominence under interim manager Michael Carrick.
Mainoo's previous contract was due to expire in 2027, and his future had been the subject of considerable speculation. According to reports from Sky Sports and others, the England international was heavily linked with a departure last summer and during the January transfer window after falling out of favour under former head coach Ruben Amorim. Serie A side Napoli and Premier League rivals Chelsea were among the clubs credited with interest in securing his signature.
However, United consistently blocked any exit, and Mainoo's fortunes have transformed dramatically since Carrick's appointment. The 21-year-old has started 12 of United's last 13 Premier League matches, re-establishing himself as a pivotal figure in the centre of the park. Speaking to the club's official website, Mainoo expressed his delight at extending his stay. "Manchester United has always been my home; this special club means everything to my family," he said. "I have grown up seeing the impact that our club has on our city, and I relish the responsibility that comes with wearing this shirt."
The new contract represents a major vote of confidence in Mainoo from the club's hierarchy. Director of football Jason Wilcox described him as "one of the most naturally gifted young footballers in the world" and a "perfect role model" for the club's academy prospects. Mainoo's journey from the club's youth facilities at Littleton Road and Carrington to the first team at Old Trafford embodies the pathway United seeks to promote, making his decision to stay particularly symbolic.
His recent form also earned him a recall to the England squad for the March international fixtures, underlining his rapid development. After a 2-1 win over Brentford, Mainoo told Sky Sports, "I’ve loved every minute of it, especially under the boss now. Just feeling the confidence." His performances have been characterised by technical security, tactical intelligence, and a maturity beyond his years, filling a crucial role in United's midfield.
The contract extension also has significant implications for United's planning. With veteran midfielder Casemiro expected to depart the club this summer, Mainoo is poised to assume even greater responsibility next season. His commitment provides stability and a cornerstone around which Carrick, or a permanent successor, can build the team's future. For Mainoo, securing his long-term future at his boyhood club allows him to focus fully on his development and on helping United challenge for major honours, a goal he explicitly referenced in his statement.
