- FC Köln have completed the signing of centre-back Luka Lochoshvili from 2. Bundesliga side 1. FC Nürnberg, the Bundesliga club confirmed on Thursday. The 28-year-old Georgian international joins Köln on a permanent deal for a reported fee in the region of €4-5 million, signing a contract that will keep him at the RheinEnergieStadion until June 2029.
Lochoshvili enjoyed a productive 2023-24 season with Nürnberg, featuring in 33 league matches and contributing significantly to their attack from defence with five goals and two assists. He initially joined Nürnberg in January 2022 from Wolfsburg, making 65 appearances across all competitions for the club. Prior to his time in Germany, Lochoshvili played for Dinamo Tbilisi in his native Georgia and also had a spell with Bitum Chełm in Poland.
Köln’s sporting director, Thomas Kessler, expressed his satisfaction with the acquisition, highlighting Lochoshvili’s experience and suitability for the team’s needs. Kessler stated the club were convinced to sign Lochoshvili due to his profile and the qualities he brings to the defence, specifically mentioning his strength in duels, aerial ability, and physical presence. The addition of a left-footed centre-back is also seen as strengthening Köln’s options in that position.
Lochoshvili himself voiced his excitement about the move, stating his desire to play at the highest level and his belief in the project at Köln. He described positive discussions with club officials as a key factor in his decision, and expressed his eagerness to represent the club and play in front of their supporters. Köln finished 16th in the Bundesliga last season, narrowly avoiding relegation via the promotion/relegation play-off, and will hope Lochoshvili’s arrival bolsters their defensive stability ahead of the upcoming campaign.
This transfer represents an investment in Köln’s backline as they seek to improve their Bundesliga standing. Lochoshvili’s arrival provides competition and depth in central defence, potentially forming a key partnership alongside existing players.
