Tottenham Hotspur have decided against making Joao Palhinha’s loan move from Bayern Munich permanent, according to reports from Tom Barclay of The Sun and transfer expert Fabrizio Romano. The decision comes following the club’s significant acquisitions of Mateus Fernandes from West Ham for £85 million and Sandro Tonali from Newcastle United for a fee of £100 million including add-ons.
Palhinha impressed during his loan spell with Tottenham, notably scoring a crucial goal on the final day of the season to secure the club’s Premier League status. A permanent transfer would have cost around £26 million, with personal terms already agreed, but the influx of midfielders has altered the club’s plans.
Roberto De Zerbi, Tottenham’s new manager, now has a wealth of options in central midfield, including Fernandes, Tonali, Rodrigo Bentancur, Archie Gray, Lucas Bergvall, and Pape Sarr, as well as Conor Gallagher. With Tottenham not competing in European football next season, the need for additional midfield depth has diminished.
Fabrizio Romano confirmed that Palhinha was keen to remain at the club, but the signings of Fernandes and Tonali ultimately led to the decision. Barclay noted that many Tottenham fans would have anticipated this outcome, acknowledging Palhinha’s valuable contribution during a difficult period for the club. The move allows Tottenham to allocate funds elsewhere, potentially towards strengthening other areas of the squad, and signals a clear shift in midfield priorities under De Zerbi.
