Kompany hails Bayern's dramatic comeback as 'relegation playoff' scenes
Bayern Munich manager Vincent Kompany likened his team's celebrations after a remarkable 4-3 comeback victory over Mainz to the scenes of a relegation playoff, praising the mentality of his squad. The Bavarian giants overturned a three-goal halftime deficit for only the second time in the club's history, echoing a similar fightback secured against Freiburg earlier this month.
Kompany was blunt in his assessment of a disastrous first half, stating that 'everything went wrong' and admitting Mainz could have scored four or five goals. He described the halftime team talk as straightforward, focusing on quality and mentality rather than complex tactical analysis. According to the Belgian coach, the key was the team accepting the fight and discarding any fear of injury that may have been holding them back.
The dramatic turnaround was engineered by Kompany's three second-half substitutes, all of whom found the net. Michael Olise, Harry Kane, and Jamal Musiala were introduced after the break in a pre-planned move by the manager, irrespective of the scoreline. Kompany revealed he did not want to simply leave the star trio on the bench but was also cautious of taking unnecessary risks with their fitness.
He singled out Olise for particular praise following the winger's spectacular goal, joking that the player had set the bar so high that he would have been disappointed if the effort had not gone in. Kompany added that such moments of individual brilliance from Olise, while 'absurd', were becoming something the team was getting used to witnessing.
The victory provides a significant morale boost ahead of a crucial UEFA Champions League semi-final first leg against Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday. The comeback demonstrated a resilience that Bayern will need to call upon in Paris, as they look to salvage a difficult domestic season with European success. Kompany's ability to motivate his team for such a fightback will be tested again on the continent's biggest stage.
