Ibrahima Konate is set to depart Liverpool this summer as a free agent after contract negotiations stalled, according to reports. Discussions between the club and the 27-year-old centre-back had been ongoing throughout the season, with Liverpool attempting to prevent a repeat of Trent Alexander-Arnold’s potential situation of leaving for a minimal fee upon contract expiration.
While positive talks were reported as recently as April, with Konate himself stating the parties were ‘close to an agreement’, frustrations have mounted in recent weeks. Sources indicate that while progress was made on salary and contract length, disagreements over a signing-on fee and agent payments ultimately proved insurmountable. As a result, Arne Slot’s team have ‘accepted’ Konate will not be part of the squad next season, prompting a search for a new central defender.
Konate joined Liverpool from RB Leipzig in 2021, providing valuable cover and competition in the centre-back position. He has made 85 appearances for the club across all competitions, contributing to a Premier League title and other domestic cup successes. However, injuries have punctuated his time at Anfield, limiting his consistency.
Liverpool are now internally discussing a potential return for Jarell Quansah, who was sold to Bayer Leverkusen for £35 million last July. The Reds retain a buy-back clause of €80 million (£69 million), which is set to decrease in 2027. The club reportedly ‘remain huge admirers’ of Quansah’s potential and are monitoring his development in Germany. Another option being considered is Konstantinos Koulierakis, a 22-year-old Greek defender whose Wolfsburg side were recently relegated from the Bundesliga, potentially making him available for a fee of around £22 million.
The need for a centre-back is further compounded by existing financial constraints, with Fenway Sports Group unlikely to authorize significant spending after already investing £60 million in Jeremy Jacquet. The club also has priorities in strengthening other positions, including right winger, central midfielder, and left-back. The departure of Konate and potential arrival of a new defender will shape the defensive options available to Slot as he prepares for his first season in charge.
