Sassuolo midfielder Ismaël Koné has admitted he is unsure where he will be playing next season, despite a breakout campaign in Serie A. The 23-year-old made the admission during an interview with intervista, reflecting on his journey from the Ivory Coast to Canada and his current form with the Neroverdi.
Koné joined Sassuolo in 2022 and quickly established himself as a key player, contributing six goals from midfield this season – a personal best. His performances have attracted interest from several Serie A clubs, including Roma and both Milan sides, with reports suggesting a release clause of €35 million exists in his contract. However, according to the interview, Sassuolo’s sporting director Giovanni Carnevali is unwilling to negotiate a lower fee.
The Canadian international spoke fondly of his time at Sassuolo, praising the club for helping him develop as a player. He highlighted the influence of manager Fabio Grosso, describing him as both a “very good coach” and a “very good person,” emphasizing the positive communication and understanding between the two. Koné also recalled a previous stint with Olympique de Marseille under Roberto De Zerbi, acknowledging differing tactical philosophies and a heated exchange, but ultimately expressing respect for the Italian coach.
Koné’s journey to professional football began with a move from the Ivory Coast to Canada at the age of seven. He expressed gratitude to Canada for the opportunities it provided, making his international debut for the nation. He credits his recent goalscoring form to a change in lifestyle, including a dedicated personal trainer and a focus on nutrition and recovery. Koné is currently preparing for a second World Cup appearance, feeling more prepared and confident than during his first in Qatar.
With the summer transfer window approaching, Koné’s future remains uncertain, but his impressive performances have undoubtedly put him on the radar of several top clubs. His versatility and goal-scoring ability from midfield would be a valuable asset to any team, and a move could be imminent if one of the interested parties meets Sassuolo’s valuation.
