Bournemouth midfielder Eli Junior Kroupi has confirmed his intention to represent France internationally, turning down a potential call-up to the Portugal squad for the upcoming World Cup. The decision was revealed by Portugal manager Roberto Martínez during Tuesday’s press conference announcing his final 27-man squad.
Martínez stated that the Portuguese federation had made contact with Kroupi, who qualifies to play for Portugal through his mother. Despite expressing interest in the player, Martínez confirmed that Kroupi ultimately preferred to pursue his international career with France. “I am happy because with our scouting team at the federation, we were on it before the information came out,” Martínez explained. “Before the stage in March, we approached him. But there is the will of the player, and in this case, Junior wanted to play for France. We respect that and the subject is closed.”
Kroupi, who previously represented France at under-21 level, currently plays his club football in the English Premier League with Bournemouth. He joined the Cherries in the summer of 2023 from Lorient, where he had established himself as a promising young talent in Ligue 1. His performances in midfield for Bournemouth have reportedly caught the eye of both national team setups.
The situation is somewhat unusual, as Kroupi possesses dual nationality and was eligible for both nations. While Portugal were keen to add him to their ranks, particularly given his current form, the player’s preference was clear. This decision comes as France prepares for their World Cup campaign, and Kroupi’s availability will bolster their midfield options. Didier Deschamps is expected to announce his final squad shortly, with Kroupi now in contention for a place. The news means Martínez will have to look elsewhere to fill the midfield spot, with his squad now finalised for the tournament.
