Coppa Italia Final Could Cost Atalanta European Football
Atalanta's hopes of playing European football next season could hinge on the outcome of the Coppa Italia final, according to a report from La Gazzetta dello Sport. Should Lazio, currently ninth in Serie A, win the cup against Inter Milan and Atalanta finish the league in seventh place, Gian Piero Gasperini's side would be excluded from continental competition entirely. The scenario presents a potential double blow for Atalanta, who were eliminated from this season's Europa League by Lazio on penalties in the semi-finals just last week.
The current Serie A standings, with four matches remaining, allocate European slots based on final league positions. As things stand, the top four would enter the Champions League, fifth and sixth would qualify for the Europa League, and seventh would enter the Conference League. Atalanta currently occupies that seventh spot, one point behind Roma in sixth and two behind Como in fifth. However, the Coppa Italia winner is granted an automatic Europa League place, which complicates the picture if that winner finishes outside the European qualification places in the league.
If Inter Milan wins the Coppa Italia, the European qualification via the league remains unchanged, as Inter would already be in the Champions League. In that case, Atalanta would secure a Conference League spot by finishing seventh. The critical issue for Atalanta arises if Lazio triumphs at the Stadio Olimpico on May 15th. Because Lazio is currently nine points behind Atalanta in ninth, they are unlikely to qualify for Europe through the league, meaning they would take one of Italy's two Europa League slots via their cup victory.
This would then reallocate the league-based slots. The fifth-placed team would join Lazio in the Europa League, the sixth-placed team would be demoted to the Conference League, and the seventh-placed team—currently Atalanta—would be left with no European football. The only way for Atalanta to guarantee a European campaign under this scenario is to finish sixth or higher, thereby overtaking either Roma or Como. A Lazio victory, coupled with Atalanta finishing seventh, would see Gasperini's men miss out on Europe for the first time since the 2016-17 season.
The situation adds significant pressure to Atalanta's final four Serie A matches against Salernitana, Lecce, Roma, and Torino. The club must now not only focus on catching the teams above them but also nervously monitor Lazio's cup final performance. For Lazio, managed by Maurizio Sarri, winning the Coppa Italia offers a crucial backdoor route into Europe after a disappointing league campaign that sees them far adrift of their usual top-four ambitions. The final outcome will define the continental landscape for both clubs next season.
