Juventus eye Atalanta's Bernasconi as left-side solution
Juventus are targeting Atalanta's young left-back Lorenzo Bernasconi as part of a planned overhaul of their left flank this summer, according to reports from Italy. The Bianconeri's sporting director, Cristiano Giuntoli, has identified the position as a key area for substantial improvement, with a desire to add more dynamic, attacking options to the squad.
Bernasconi, 22, has emerged as a primary target. The left-footed defender, who can operate as a traditional full-back or in a more advanced wing-back role, is seen as a versatile asset who can provide both width and support in central areas. Juventus's interest was reportedly cemented after scouts watched his recent performance against them in Serie A, where he displayed notable pace and substance despite some youthful errors.
His potential acquisition is viewed as a strategic, long-term project. Atalanta signed Bernasconi from Cremonese for their Under-23 team just two years ago for a minimal fee, and his market value has since risen sharply to an estimated 20 million euros, reflecting his development and performances. Securing him from a direct league rival like Atalanta is expected to be a complex mission for the Turin club.
The move for Bernasconi is intrinsically linked to the future of current Juventus wing-back Andrea Cambiaso. The club's ability to pursue new targets is said to depend significantly on generating funds from player sales, and Cambiaso has attracted considerable interest. According to the reports, clubs in the Premier League and Spain, as well as AC Milan in Italy, are monitoring the 24-year-old.
Juventus are believed to value Cambiaso at around 40 million euros, a figure that would provide a significant financial boost for their summer transfer plans. While manager Massimiliano Allegri is not pushing for his sale, the club's pragmatic approach means a substantial offer would be seriously considered. His departure would directly open a slot and provide resources for a replacement like Bernasconi.
This strategy aligns with recent comments from the club's football executive, Giovanni Manna, who stated the squad needs a few key players with the right personality and experience to elevate the existing young core. In a separate but related development, Juventus are also considering a move for experienced AS Roma left-back Leonardo Spinazzola, whose contract expires in June.
The 31-year-old Spinazzola, a former Juventus youth product, would offer a low-cost, short-term solution as a Club-Trained Player, not occupying a non-EU slot in Serie A squad lists. His potential arrival would provide experienced cover and competition, allowing a younger signing like Bernasconi time to adapt. Juventus's summer activity on the left side appears to be taking a multi-faceted shape, balancing immediate needs with long-term planning.
