Juventus are increasingly interested in Parma goalkeeper Zion Suzuki as a potential replacement for Wojciech Szczęsny, according to reports in Italy. The move comes amid complications in their pursuit of Inter’s Yann Sommer and lingering doubts over Guglielmo Vicario of Tottenham Hotspur.
Suzuki, born in 2002 to a Japanese mother and a Ghanaian-American father, has quickly established himself as a key player for Parma since joining from Sint-Truiden in Belgium last year. Parma are reportedly seeking a fee of €30 million for the 21-year-old, a figure that may prove challenging for Juventus, especially given competition from clubs in the Premier League and Paris Saint-Germain.
The Japanese goalkeeper’s profile appeals to Juventus manager Luciano Spalletti due to his technical ability and suitability for a possession-based style of play. Statistical data from Fotmob indicates Suzuki averages nearly 22 successful passes per game, significantly higher than Szczęsny’s 17. He also excels in long ball distribution, averaging 8 per match compared to Szczęsny’s under 4, a skill Spalletti could utilize to quickly transition the ball to attackers.
Suzuki’s physical attributes – he stands at 1.90m – and explosiveness have also impressed scouts. He led Serie A in high claims last season with 81, providing reassurance to his defense. His ability to launch quick counter-attacks, demonstrated previously with Perin and Conceicao, aligns with Spalletti’s tactical vision for Juventus.
