Nico González’s future is becoming increasingly uncertain as the coming weeks unfold, with Juventus emerging as a potential rival to Atlético Madrid for the Argentinian winger’s signature. González recently completed a loan spell with Atlético, but the club did not trigger the €32 million release clause due to the player failing to meet the required appearance threshold, a consequence of a season hampered by injuries.
Despite this, reports from Marca indicate that González was hoping to remain in Madrid, enjoying a strong relationship with manager Diego Simeone and with Atlético reportedly considering a renewed approach. However, the situation has reportedly become more complex with Juventus potentially including the 1998-born player in their plans for the upcoming season, potentially complicating any transfer.
Simeone is believed to be a strong advocate for González’s return, impressed by his tactical versatility and combative spirit during his time at the club. The Argentinian is capable of playing on either flank, as a winger or full-back, making him a valuable asset in Simeone’s system. González himself is reportedly keen on a return to the Spanish capital, and according to Spanish sources, he would even be willing to accept a 20% reduction in his current salary to facilitate the move, demonstrating his commitment to the club and project.
The primary obstacle remains the financial aspect of the deal. Atlético Madrid have consistently viewed the initial €32 million release clause as excessive, and are hoping to negotiate a lower fee, reportedly around €26 million. This possibility may diminish as the June 30th deadline approaches, after which previously favourable conditions may no longer apply. This could strengthen Juventus’s negotiating position, especially given Atlético’s expressed interest. Atlético Madrid now face a critical decision: pursue a deal for González in the coming weeks, or explore alternative options in the transfer market. A swift resolution will be needed to avoid losing out on a player Simeone clearly values.
