Leon Goretzka, the Bayern Munich midfielder, is set to become a free agent in 27 days, and his future is once again uncertain following recent changes at AC Milan. The Italian club had previously appeared to be the frontrunners for his signature, but a period of upheaval both on and off the pitch has thrown those plans into doubt.
Goretzka, born in 1995, had seemed poised to join Milan under manager Max Allegri as a key reinforcement ahead of their return to the Champions League. However, a restructuring led by Gerry Cardinale has prompted Goretzka’s representatives to re-engage with other interested clubs. These include teams from the English Premier League, with Arsenal reportedly holding a long-standing interest, as well as clubs in Turkey who are increasingly able to attract high-profile players with lucrative contracts.
Juventus had previously expressed interest in Goretzka earlier in the year, when manager Luciano Spalletti identified a need for experienced, winning players to improve the team’s mentality. The club gathered information on the German international, and Goretzka was said to be receptive to the idea of playing in Serie A, a sentiment confirmed by his advanced negotiations with Milan.
However, Juventus’s financial situation has shifted since then. The club will not receive the financial benefits of Champions League participation, which would have been necessary to offer Goretzka a salary comparable to his current earnings at Bayern – reportedly between €6 and €7 million net per year, plus bonuses. Furthermore, Spalletti and the club’s directors have prioritized the signings of a goalkeeper and a centre-forward. Juventus has not ruled out a move for Goretzka, but will wait to address other areas of the squad once these immediate needs are met. Goretzka himself has indicated he is not in a rush to make a decision, stating he will choose a club when 'the time feels right'. Juventus will continue to monitor the situation and remain hopeful.
