The agreement comes after protracted negotiations, during which club legend Uli Hoeneß publicly commented on the player’s wage expectations, stating Laimer was not “Diego Maradona.” Despite the pointed remarks, sporting director Max Eberl prioritized retaining the Austrian international.
Hoeneß’s comments underscored the club’s stance on player remuneration, but ultimately did not derail the deal. Eberl and Bayern opted for continuity, valuing Laimer’s reliability and versatility as a key component of Vincent Kompany’s squad. The decision represents a pragmatic approach, prioritizing a proven player over pursuing potentially more high-profile alternatives.
Laimer has been a consistent performer for Bayern since joining in 2023, becoming one of the most prominent Austrian players at the club since David Alaba. He featured in 47 matches across all competitions last season, primarily as a right-sided defender, though capable of playing on the left. His partnership with Michael Olise proved particularly effective during Kompany’s first season in charge.
Born in Salzburg, Laimer has made 136 appearances for Bayern, scoring seven goals and providing 19 assists. His durability was further demonstrated during the recent World Cup, where he played every minute for Austria before their round of sixteen defeat to eventual champions Spain. The player’s representatives reportedly adjusted their financial demands during negotiations, potentially in response to Hoeneß’s comments.
Bayern’s decision to extend Laimer’s contract also reflects their financial commitments to other recent signings, including Ismael Saibari and Nathaniel Brown.
