Atletico Madrid are considering a summer move for Newcastle United forward Nick Woltemade, according to reports in Spain. The potential transfer comes as Atletico prepare for possible departures in their forward line, with Julian Alvarez attracting interest from Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain, and Alexander Sorloth potentially leaving the club.
Sorloth has been a key figure for Diego Simeone since joining from Villarreal two years ago, but Atletico are now open to selling the Norway international. Should Sorloth depart, Atletico are seeking a replacement with a similar profile, leading them to revisit their interest in Woltemade.
Atleti initially showed interest in Woltemade last summer when he was still at Stuttgart, and BILD, via Diario AS, reports that they are prepared to make a renewed effort to sign him. Woltemade’s future at Newcastle is currently uncertain following a challenging first season in England.
Woltemade began his time at Newcastle promisingly but has seen limited playing time as a striker in recent months, often being deployed in midfield instead. This shift in position has reportedly caused the player dissatisfaction, increasing the likelihood of a summer exit. Newcastle spent upwards of €75 million to secure Woltemade’s services last year, and would likely seek a similar fee should they choose to sell him.
Atletico could potentially offset the cost of Woltemade with funds generated from the sale of Sorloth, with an estimated €30-35 million expected from his departure. If Alvarez remains at the club, a forward line pairing of Alvarez and Woltemade within Simeone’s favoured 4-4-2 formation could prove to be a dynamic attacking force. However, the club has not yet confirmed whether they will actively pursue a deal for the German forward this summer.
