Laurent Abergel is set to join OGC Nice on a three-year contract following his unexpected release from FC Lorient, the clubs have confirmed. The 33-year-old midfielder’s departure from Lorient was announced on Tuesday, despite having three years remaining on his contract with the Breton club. Abergel will reunite with former Lorient manager Olivier Pantaloni at Nice, a key factor in his decision.
Abergel arrived at Lorient from Ajaccio in 2019 and quickly established himself as a pivotal figure, captaining the side for a significant period. He made 233 appearances for Les Merlus, scoring nine goals and providing 14 assists, and was a key player in their Ligue 2 title-winning seasons in 2020 and 2025. His commitment to the club was evident, making his recent desire to leave all the more surprising.
The midfielder reportedly expressed his disappointment and disagreement with the club following Pantaloni’s departure earlier this season. Abergel stated in a club communiqué that his decision to leave was for personal reasons, hoping it would be understood by supporters. He expressed gratitude for the seven years spent at Lorient, stating he gave everything for the club’s success.
Negotiations between Lorient and Nice proceeded amicably, allowing Abergel to pursue the opportunity to link up with Pantaloni. While the financial details of the transfer have not been disclosed, Nice is expected to officially announce the signing later this week. Abergel’s experience and leadership qualities will be a valuable addition to Nice’s midfield as they prepare for the upcoming Ligue 1 season. This move signifies Nice’s intent to strengthen their squad under Pantaloni’s leadership.
