The Austrian Football Federation (ÖFB) has expressed its desire to keep Ralf Rangnick as the national team manager until after the UEFA European Championship in 2028, according to statements made by ÖFB president Josef Pröll. This development introduces a potential complication to reported interest from AC Milan, who are seeking to appoint a new head coach.
Pröll indicated that discussions with Rangnick have taken place and that the federation is keen for him to remain in his current role. He stated, during coverage of Austria’s Women’s World Cup qualifying match against Slovenia, that Rangnick is fully aware of the resources available to him and that the decision ultimately rests with the German coach. The ÖFB’s stance represents a clear attempt to dissuade Rangnick from pursuing other opportunities.
Rangnick has been in charge of the Austrian national team since 2022, overseeing a period of relative stability and improvement. He previously managed RB Leipzig and Manchester United, and is known for his high-pressing, energetic style of play. His current contract with the Austrian federation is reportedly unsigned despite months of negotiation, fueling speculation about a potential move.
AC Milan recently sent representatives to Vienna to discuss the possibility of Rangnick taking over as their new manager, according to reports. The club is searching for a permanent replacement following a period of instability in the managerial position. Milan finished fourth in Serie A last season, failing to qualify directly for the Champions League group stage. The appointment of Rangnick would signal a significant shift in tactical approach for the Rossoneri.
Rangnick departed with the Austrian national team for the United States without providing a definitive answer to the ÖFB regarding his future. A decision is anticipated in the coming days, potentially before Austria’s opening match of the European Championship against Jordan on June 16th. The situation remains fluid, with both Milan and the Austrian federation actively pursuing their respective objectives.
