Barcelona are reportedly prioritizing a move for Juventus left-back Andrea Cambiaso, potentially ending their pursuit of Chelsea’s Marc Cucurella, according to Fabrizio Romano. While the Catalan club has been heavily linked with several attacking targets including Anthony Gordon and a potential bid for Julian Alvarez, strengthening the defense remains a priority.
Initial plans to sign Inter Milan centre-back Alessandro Bastoni have been paused, but the search for a new left-back has intensified. Cucurella had emerged as a leading candidate, with reports suggesting the Spaniard was unsettled at Chelsea, but Barcelona are now considering Cambiaso as a superior option. Chelsea have also been linked with Cambiaso as a potential replacement for Cucurella, with Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid also showing interest in the Chelsea defender.
Romano confirmed on his YouTube channel that Cambiaso is “one of two or three candidates” for the left-back role at Camp Nou, stating that Barcelona have been closely evaluating the Italian international. He added that Juventus may be open to selling Cambiaso if a suitable offer arrives, especially given the club’s financial considerations. Data analytics firm SciSports currently rates Cambiaso as a stronger overall player than Cucurella, citing superior attacking qualities such as crossing and dribbling.
Although 26-year-old Cambiaso’s peak SciSkill score is slightly lower than Cucurella’s best form, the data suggests he is currently the more effective player. Cucurella, who has experienced a recent dip in form, would need to rediscover his peak level to surpass Cambiaso’s current rating. However, Romano cautioned that a deal for Cambiaso is not imminent, as Barcelona are currently focused on other transfer priorities. The potential move for Cambiaso represents a shift in strategy for Barcelona, as they seek a long-term solution at left-back.
