Bayern Munich fined by UEFA but avoid stadium ban for PSG clash
Bayern Munich have avoided a spectator ban for their upcoming Champions League semi-final second leg against Paris Saint-Germain after UEFA issued financial sanctions for the crowd disturbances that marred their quarter-final victory over Real Madrid. According to Sky Germany, European football's governing body has fined the German club a total of €89,625 for multiple breaches of safety and conduct regulations but will allow the match at the Allianz Arena on May 6th to proceed with fans in attendance.
The decision ensures Bayern will have the vocal support of their famous Südkurve as they attempt to overturn a 3-2 deficit from the first leg in Paris. The investigation was triggered by incidents in the closing stages of the dramatic 4-2 second-leg victory over Real Madrid on April 18th, a match that saw Bayern progress 6-5 on aggregate. Emotional scenes erupted following a late goal, with several supporters from the south stand storming towards the pitch, crossing barriers and endangering photographers and other media personnel, some of whom were injured.
UEFA's breakdown of the fines, as confirmed by the German broadcaster, includes €40,000 for the violation of the inner pitch area, €14,000 for blocking public passageways, and €5,625 for the throwing of objects. In a subsequent update, it was reported that the club must pay an additional €30,000 for "disseminating a message deemed unacceptable for a sporting event," a charge understood to be related to a banner displayed in the crowd.
The financial penalty, while significant, will be seen as a favourable outcome for Thomas Tuchel's side compared to the prospect of playing a crucial European semi-final behind closed doors. Stadium bans have been levied by UEFA in the past for similar offences, but the governing body has opted for a monetary punishment on this occasion. The club has yet to issue a public statement regarding the fines.
For Bayern, maintaining a full home atmosphere is a considerable boost as they look to overcome a one-goal deficit against Kylian Mbappé's PSG. The Bavarians have a strong recent record at the Allianz Arena in European competition and will rely on their supporters to provide a decisive edge in what promises to be a high-stakes encounter. The outcome removes a major distraction for the team and allows focus to remain solely on the pitch for the decisive clash.
