Borussia Dortmund secure Champions League spot with dominant win over Freiburg
Borussia Dortmund mathematically secured a place in next season's Champions League with a comprehensive 4-0 victory over a heavily rotated SC Freiburg side at Signal Iduna Park on Sunday. The result, achieved in Dortmund's 1000th Bundesliga home game, guarantees a top-four finish with three matches remaining and ends any lingering doubt after two consecutive league defeats.
Goals from Maximilian Beier in the eighth minute, Serhou Guirassy in the 14th, and Ramy Bensebaini in the 32nd put the hosts out of sight before halftime. A quieter second half saw substitute Fabio Silva add a fourth in the 87th minute to seal a celebratory 600th Bundesliga home win for the club. Freiburg, who made seven changes to their lineup with a Europa League semi-final first leg against Braga looming on Thursday, offered little resistance and failed to seriously test Dortmund goalkeeper Gregor Kobel.
Dortmund manager Niko Kovac praised his team's application in a post-match interview with Sportschau. "The team showed a great game today for over 90 minutes," Kovac said. "The manner in which we performed pleased me." The victory solidifies Dortmund's hold on second place in the Bundesliga table, a position Kovac expressed confidence in defending for the remainder of the campaign.
For Freiburg, the match served as a subdued preparation for their European fixture, with key players like Matthias Ginter, Yuito Suzuki, and Yohan Manzambi omitted from the squad entirely. Coach Julian Schuster acknowledged the difficult circumstances but was critical of his team's defensive display. "The conditions today were demanding," Schuster told Sportschau. "But we are also self-critical enough to say: we have to defend that better." The defeat leaves Freiburg in seventh, a position that currently carries a UEFA Europa Conference League qualification spot.
The match provided a platform for several younger players. Eighteen-year-old Samuele Inacio made his first senior start for Dortmund and earned applause upon his substitution, while 16-year-old Mathis Albert made his professional debut for BVB. For Freiburg, 18-year-old Rouven Tarnutzer also made his debut, and veteran Maximilian Philipp saw rare minutes after a long spell out of the team.
Dortmund's focus now shifts to consolidating second place, with an away fixture at Borussia Mönchengladbach next. Freiburg faces a pivotal week, hosting VfL Wolfsburg in the Bundesliga before their European semi-final second leg against Braga on May 7th. Captain Christian Günter emphasized the need for his team to move on quickly from the Dortmund defeat. "We will not let this throw us off course," Günter said. "We have extremely important weeks ahead of us, games where everything is at stake."
