Celtic have initiated discussions with Borussia Dortmund regarding a potential permanent transfer for United States Under-23 international Cole Campbell, according to Sky Germany. The 20-year-old winger, who has not featured in Dortmund’s first-team plans, is reportedly open to a move to the Scottish champions. Dortmund are understood to be willing to sell the player as he does not figure in head coach Niko Kovač’s plans for the upcoming season.
Campbell spent the latter half of the 2023-24 campaign on loan at TSG Hoffenheim, but struggled to make an impact, featuring in only five matches without registering a goal or assist. Hoffenheim opted not to trigger the €7.5 million purchase option included in the loan agreement, paving the way for Campbell to seek opportunities elsewhere. This lack of consistent playing time follows a promising season at youth level.
Prior to his loan spell, Campbell showcased his attacking capabilities in the U-19 Bundesliga West, where he recorded an impressive tally of eight goals and ten assists in 22 appearances. This form highlighted his potential, but Dortmund appear unconvinced of his readiness for regular first-team football. The club signed Campbell from Los Angeles Galaxy II in January 2023, hoping he would develop into a future first-team player.
Celtic’s interest presents Campbell with the chance to reignite his development in a competitive environment. The Scottish Premiership offers a different challenge than the Bundesliga, and the opportunity to play regularly under Brendan Rodgers could be appealing. While a transfer fee has not yet been disclosed, Dortmund will likely seek to recoup a portion of the investment they made in the young American. Should the transfer be completed, Campbell would add depth and potential to Celtic’s attacking options, providing competition for places in the wide areas.
