Mathieu Bodmer has resigned from his position as Director of Sport at Le Havre AC, the club confirmed following their crucial 2-0 victory over Lorient which secured their Ligue 1 status for another season. Bodmer announced his decision in the mixed zone after the match, citing internal disagreements as the primary reason for his departure.
According to reports, Bodmer had informed the club’s president of his intention to leave several weeks prior to the announcement. He stated he had found certain aspects of the internal workings of the club difficult to accept, leading him to the decision to step down. Bodmer emphasized a desire for respect as a key factor in his choice, adding that he felt he needed to prioritize his own principles.
Bodmer’s departure comes at the end of a season where Le Havre finished 14th in Ligue 1, accumulating 35 points. The newly promoted side faced a challenging campaign, battling relegation for much of the season, but ultimately secured their survival with a strong finish. His role in navigating the club through this difficult period will be recognised, despite the circumstances of his exit.
Prior to joining Le Havre, Bodmer had a lengthy career as a professional footballer, playing as a defensive midfielder for clubs including Lille, Lyon, and Saint-Étienne. He also earned eight caps for the French national team. Following his playing career, he transitioned into football administration, taking on roles at several clubs before arriving at Le Havre. The club now faces the task of finding a replacement to lead their sporting strategy as they look to build on their first season back in the top flight. This unexpected change in leadership could introduce uncertainty as Le Havre plans for the future.
