RB Leipzig are aiming to generate €113 million through player sales this summer to fund their own transfer activity, according to reports in Germany. The Bundesliga club currently has a squad of 35 professionals and is looking to streamline its ranks under new coach Martín Demichelis.
BILD reports that Leipzig has identified a list of 15 players who could be sold or released as part of the cost-cutting measures. Demichelis has indicated he will give each player a period of four to five weeks to impress during pre-season, with decisions on their futures to follow. The coach stated to BILD that time is needed to assess each player’s suitability for the squad.
Conrad Harder, who arrived last summer, has already been offered to other clubs, suggesting he is not currently in Demichelis’ plans. Johan Bakayoko, also signed last summer, is reportedly being given an opportunity to prove his worth, however. Several other players face uncertain futures, including defenders El Chadaille Bitshiabu and Castello Lukeba, who now face increased competition from recent signing Maxime Estéve.
Lukas Klostermann, Eljif Elmas, Lutsharel Geertruida, and Arthur Veermeeren have also been informed they are free to leave the club. The potential departures would free up significant wages and transfer funds for Leipzig. A number of younger players, including Ezechiel Banzuzi, Andrija Maksimovic, and Viggo Gebel, will also be under pressure to demonstrate their capabilities and secure their places in the squad.
The need to raise funds highlights Leipzig’s position in the European football landscape. The club has become known for developing and selling talent, and this summer appears to be no different. Successful sales will allow Leipzig to strengthen key areas of the squad and remain competitive in the Bundesliga and European competitions.
