Real Madrid have confirmed that Álvaro Arbeloa will leave his position as manager of the first team at the end of the current season. The club announced the agreement to terminate his contract on Tuesday evening, bringing an end to his tenure which began in January following the departure of Xabi Alonso.
Real Madrid expressed their gratitude towards Arbeloa, stating they are “very grateful” for his “loyalty, commitment and professionalism.” The club’s statement also noted that he “embodies the values” of the club and wished him and his family success in the future. Arbeloa himself had previously indicated before the final matchday of the league season that he would be departing.
Arbeloa’s departure paves the way for the anticipated return of José Mourinho to the Santiago Bernabéu. According to reports, Real Madrid will trigger Mourinho’s release clause at Benfica, following Florentino Pérez’s recent re-election as club president. This move has been widely speculated upon for several weeks, and the confirmation of Arbeloa’s exit all but confirms Mourinho’s imminent arrival.
Arbeloa took charge of Real Madrid following the dismissal of Xabi Alonso, stepping up from a role within the club’s youth setup. While his time as manager was relatively short, he was a well-respected figure at the club, having previously enjoyed a successful playing career as a defender for Real Madrid. He won numerous titles during his time as a player, including La Liga titles and the Champions League.
Mourinho’s return marks a significant shift for Real Madrid, bringing back a manager with a proven track record of success, albeit one who also courted controversy during his previous spell at the club. His appointment is expected to signal a period of renewed ambition as Real Madrid look to regain their dominance in both La Liga and European football.
