Real Madrid officials and José Mourinho have held initial discussions regarding a potential return to the club, according to reports in the Spanish newspaper Sport. The conversation, described as a half-hour video call, signals the club’s interest in Mourinho as a solution following a disappointing and turbulent season for Los Blancos.
Mourinho previously managed Real Madrid from 2010 to 2013, a period marked by significant success including a La Liga title and a Copa del Rey victory. The Portuguese manager reportedly outlined five key conditions to Real Madrid president Florentino Perez for a deal to materialize. These stipulations cover contract length, the composition of the medical staff, and the scope of his authority within the club.
Mourinho has requested a contract of at least two years, mirroring the duration of his previous spell at the Santiago Bernabéu. Perez has previously offered contracts of this length, most recently to Xabi Alonso, suggesting this demand is unlikely to be a major obstacle. He also insisted on being solely responsible for managing the team, rejecting any requirement to act as the club’s spokesperson to the media – a role previously filled by Carlo Ancelotti and currently undertaken by Arbeloa.
The former Chelsea and Manchester United manager is seeking complete independence from the club’s directors, desiring a clear separation of powers with Perez focusing on club management and Mourinho controlling the dressing room. This could prove challenging given Perez’s historical tendency to involve himself in sporting decisions, often prioritizing the inclusion of star players over team balance. Mourinho also wants greater control over medical protocols, including the ability to seek second opinions for players and direct communication with medical staff.
The most significant hurdle to a potential agreement appears to be Mourinho’s demand for the removal of Antonio Pintus, the club’s highly-regarded Italian fitness coach. Mourinho reportedly distrusts Pintus and believes his presence would allow information to leak to Perez, undermining his authority. Pintus is considered a trusted advisor to Perez, making his departure a difficult proposition for the club. The outcome of these negotiations will determine whether Mourinho returns to Madrid for the upcoming season.
