Rafael Leao is facing a potential ban that could rule him out of the start of the World Cup after being sent off during Portugal’s 2-1 friendly victory over Chile on Saturday evening. The AC Milan winger was shown a red card following an altercation with Chile’s Ivan Roman, appearing to land a punch during a scuffle that followed challenges between teammates.
Leao subsequently released a statement on social media explaining he was attempting to defend a teammate and had no intention of causing harm. The incident occurred after a series of challenges involving Chile’s Felipe Faundez and Portugal’s Joao Cancelo, escalating when Roman intervened.
According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, a violent conduct red card typically results in a two or three-match ban, which would jeopardise Leao’s participation in Portugal’s opening World Cup fixtures. However, recent precedents offer a glimmer of hope for the player and the national team. Cristiano Ronaldo received only a one-match ban for a similar offence last year, as did Curacao’s Jurgen Locadia for an elbow during a friendly against Scotland.
This means Leao could potentially miss only Portugal’s upcoming friendly against Nigeria, with his World Cup availability remaining intact. The final decision rests with FIFA officials, who may impose a more severe punishment given the nature of the incident.
Leao’s situation has added intrigue to his potential summer transfer, with both Manchester United and Arsenal having been linked with a move for the 26-year-old. AC Milan have reportedly approved his exit, and Arsenal have been ‘offered’ the chance to sign him, according to reports in Italy. United are also believed to be interested, with Leao himself having previously expressed admiration for both clubs, particularly due to his idolisation of Cristiano Ronaldo. Milan are reportedly seeking a fee of around €50 million for the player, though so far only Galatasaray have submitted a formal offer.
