Rafael Leao has publicly expressed his admiration for Manchester United, increasing the likelihood of a transfer to Old Trafford as AC Milan prepare to lower their asking price for the winger. The 26-year-old has become a standout performer in Serie A since joining Milan from Lille in 2019, accumulating 80 goals and 65 assists in 291 appearances.
Milan had previously quoted over €100 million (£87m) for Leao, but following a disappointing season and the player’s refusal to sign a contract extension, the Italian club are now willing to sell for a reduced fee of €50 million (£43.5m) according to reports. Intermediaries have already offered United Leao’s services, with his representatives actively seeking a transfer.
In a recent interview, Leao stated he enjoys watching the Premier League and specifically named Manchester United, citing Cristiano Ronaldo as his idol. He also mentioned following Arsenal, suggesting both clubs are of interest to him. While the player’s preference appears to lean towards United, his final destination will depend on which clubs make formal bids.
Gazzetta dello Sport reports that United and Fenerbahce are currently the most interested parties, however Leao is expected to favour a move to the Premier League over the Turkish Super Lig. The potential transfer aligns with co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s reported interest in strengthening United’s attacking options, and follows the near completion of a £38m deal for Atalanta midfielder Ederson.
Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich have also been offered Leao, but are currently focused on alternative targets. United are also tracking other left wingers including Morgan Rogers, Yan Diomande, and Iliman Ndiaye. A move for Leao would allow him to follow in the footsteps of his idol, Ronaldo, and fulfil his ambition of playing in the Premier League.
