Rafael Leao is expected to rejoin the AC Milan squad in Perth, Australia, within the next week, following a post-World Cup break, according to reports from Milan-based sources. The Portuguese forward’s future at the club has been the subject of speculation after he publicly hinted at a desire for a new challenge during the tournament in Qatar.
Despite Leao's statements, which reportedly caused concern within the Milan hierarchy – though owner Gerry Cardinale had previously questioned his long-term future – no concrete offers have materialized that meet Milan’s valuation. The club is seeking to recoup around €50-60 million for the 24-year-old to offset the significant expenditure on recent acquisitions such as Gonçalo Ramos and Malick Thiaw, who together cost €100 million.
Milan are actively pursuing alternatives in the attacking midfield position, with Greek talent Karetsas of Genk currently identified as their primary target. Previous considerations of Nicolo Zaniolo and a potential move for Phil Foden from Manchester City have not progressed. The arrival of Christian Pulisic and Christopher Nkunku provides competition on the left wing, alongside Samuel Chukwueze on the right, potentially making Leao’s role redundant if he remains at the club.
Interest in Leao has largely come from Turkish clubs, with Galatasaray emerging as the most proactive suitor. The Istanbul-based side are prepared to offer a four-year contract worth €10 million per season, but matching Milan’s asking price for the player’s transfer fee presents a challenge. Galatasaray’s previous highest transfer fee paid was €75 million for Victor Osimhen. Fenerbahce have also been linked, but have already invested heavily in attacking players, including Mason Greenwood, and have a settled option in Irfan Aktürkoglu on the left wing. Other potential destinations, such as Spain or England, have not yielded any firm offers, despite Leao’s preference for those leagues.
Milan have recently secured contract extensions for young players Federico Comotto, until 2031, and are working on a new deal for Francesco Camarda. The situation surrounding Leao remains fluid, with the possibility of a loan move being considered, though a loan without an obligation to buy is unlikely to be accepted by Milan.
