Rafael Leao has indicated a potential willingness to remain at AC Milan, softening his stance on seeking a new challenge elsewhere. The Portuguese forward, speaking after scoring against Uzbekistan, stated he will decide his future after the conclusion of the European Championship. This comes after Leao publicly expressed his desire for a “new challenge” in a different league at the end of May, citing the Premier League or La Liga as preferable destinations to further showcase his talent.
Leao’s previous comments, which included criticism of the tactical system at Milan and playing through a pubalgia injury for several months, reportedly left the club surprised, particularly given the timing. However, his recent statements following the match against Uzbekistan suggest a shift in perspective. He praised incoming Milan coach Paulo Amorim as a “very good” manager, while deferring any concrete decisions until after his participation in the tournament.
The change in tone has led to speculation that Leao is reassessing his options, potentially due to a lack of concrete offers from top clubs in England or Spain. While there was reported interest from Galatasaray and Fenerbahçe, the latter quickly dismissed a potential move after a brief meeting. Leao has previously mentioned admiration for clubs like Manchester United and Chelsea, but these have not yet translated into formal transfer bids. It is understood that any potential deal would require Leao to contribute around €50 million towards the transfer fee.
Complicating a potential move to Milan under Amorim is the tactical fit. Amorim’s preferred formations may not naturally accommodate Leao’s strengths, potentially requiring adaptation from the player. Furthermore, Amorim is known for prioritizing team harmony and is not inclined to cater to individual demands. Despite this, Leao’s goal against Uzbekistan serves as a reminder of his capabilities, and could potentially reignite his form. Portugal’s coach has only given Leao 26 minutes of playing time in two matches, indicating a lack of guaranteed playing time even on the international stage. A continued stay at Milan would present challenges, but also the opportunity for a fresh start under a highly-regarded manager.
