Leeds United are intensifying their efforts to sign Sassuolo centre-back Tarik Muharemovic, with talks progressing positively over the weekend, according to TEAMtalk. The 23-year-old Bosnian international has attracted interest from several Premier League clubs, but Leeds are currently leading the race for his signature.
Muharemovic has emerged as a highly-rated young defender in Italy, prompting interest from Serie A champions Inter Milan earlier this summer, though their pursuit has since cooled. Leeds are now looking to capitalise on this shift, preparing to meet Sassuolo’s asking price of around €40million (£34m, $45.5m).
The potential transfer would also benefit Juventus, who retain a sell-on clause from their previous sale of Muharemovic to Sassuolo. The Turin club had considered re-signing the player after he impressed within their academy, but ultimately decided against a formal move, opening the door for Premier League clubs. Leeds are seeking a replacement for Pascal Struijk and view the left-footed Muharemovic as a key target.
Competition for Muharemovic is strong, with Sunderland, Bournemouth, and Newcastle United also holding discussions with his representatives. However, Leeds have made the most significant progress, and owners 49ers Enterprises believe they are well-positioned to secure the deal, which would be the second-largest in the club’s history after the £35m paid for Georginio Rutter in January 2023. Reports in Italy suggest Leeds have offered Muharemovic a contract worth €4.5m a year, approximately £57,500 a week, though these claims have not been independently verified.
Muharemovic recently received attention after an incident involving Folarin Balogun, whose red card was later overturned by FIFA following an appeal from President Donald Trump. Leeds’ interest was initially reported by Fabrizio Romano over the weekend. The club are also considering a move for Borussia Monchengladbach defender Nico Elvedi, with an official bid reportedly being prepared.
