Leeds United have made contact with Parma regarding a potential move for Belgium international midfielder Mandela Keita, according to reports. The move comes as Leeds explore alternative options to Shea Charles, whose transfer from Southampton has stalled due to disagreements over a fee.
Leeds announced the signing of Harry Wilson on Wednesday, completing a deal that had been in progress for a year. Manager Daniel Farke is aiming to add four to five players to the squad that finished 14th in the Premier League last season, with priorities including a goalkeeper, a left-sided defender, a midfielder, and a striker.
Charles has been identified as a key target, with Farke having monitored the player’s progress for 18 months, including his loan spell at Sheffield Wednesday. However, two bids have been rejected by Southampton, who are holding out for a fee of £30 million. Leeds believe their latest offer, reportedly £23 million plus add-ons, is a fair valuation, especially when compared to recent deals like Hayden Hackney’s move to Everton.
With the Charles deal facing complications, Leeds have turned their attention to Keita as a potential alternative. The 24-year-old defensive midfielder, of Guinean descent, was not included in Belgium’s squad for the recent World Cup finals. Sources indicate that Keita is open to a move to the Premier League to further his career.
However, Leeds face competition from Newcastle United and Everton for Keita’s signature. Newcastle are seeking midfield reinforcements following potential departures, while Everton are looking to replace veteran Idrissa Gueye. Parma are reportedly seeking a fee of €30 million (£26 million, $34 million) for the player and have indicated they will not prevent his departure. The outcome of the pursuit will likely depend on developments with the Charles transfer, with the Southampton player remaining Leeds’ primary target.
