Leeds United are increasingly optimistic about securing the signature of German playmaker Julian Brandt on a free transfer this summer, according to multiple sources. The 30-year-old is available after his contract with Borussia Dortmund expired, and Leeds manager Daniel Farke is looking to add quality to his squad following a 14th-place finish in the Premier League last season.
Leeds have already made two additions to their squad with the arrivals of Wales international Harry Wilson and Tarik Muharemovic in a £34 million deal, replacing Pascal Struijk. Director of football Adam Underwood is continuing to pursue further reinforcements, targeting a new goalkeeper, a striker, and another attacking midfielder. Brandt’s potential arrival would address the latter position.
Brandt has an impressive goal contribution record, having amassed 221 goals and assists in 522 senior appearances for both Borussia Dortmund and Bayer Leverkusen – averaging a goal involvement every 2.3 games. This prolific record has made him a highly sought-after free agent.
Positive discussions with Brandt’s father and agent, Jurgen, have fueled Leeds’ confidence. Transfer correspondent Fraser Fletcher previously reported the club’s “aggressive push” to bring Brandt to Elland Road, while Graham Smyth of the Yorkshire Evening Post noted Leeds’ strong position in negotiations. Former Everton chief executive Keith Wyness has stated Leeds are now favourites to beat competition from clubs like Juventus and Roma for Brandt’s signature, praising the move as a “marquee signing” that aligns with Farke’s squad upgrade plans. The addition of a player of Brandt’s calibre would signal Leeds’ ambition to push for a mid-table finish and potentially challenge for the top half of the Premier League.
