Robert Lewandowski has announced he will leave FC Barcelona at the conclusion of the current La Liga season. The Polish striker, recently crowned champion of Spain with Barcelona, will have two remaining appearances for the club before his departure, with retirement at age 37 also a possibility.
Lewandowski arrived at Barcelona from Bayern Munich in 2022 and quickly established himself as a key player, scoring 119 goals in 191 games across all competitions. During his four seasons with the club, he secured three La Liga titles and one Copa del Rey. However, his role diminished under current manager Hansi Flick, a reunion with his former Bayern coach proving less fruitful than anticipated. This season, Lewandowski was only in the starting eleven for 15 league matches, scoring 13 goals, and 11 Champions League games, adding four further goals in that competition.
His time at Barcelona concludes without a Champions League title, a significant ambition unfulfilled. The club responded to Lewandowski’s farewell message, delivered in English, with a statement in the same language, proclaiming him to have “come as a star, left as a legend.”
While a destination has not yet been confirmed, speculation has already begun regarding his next move. The forward’s departure marks the end of an era for Barcelona, and the club will now begin the process of finding a replacement for one of Europe’s most prolific goalscorers. His contributions will be remembered fondly by the Barcelona faithful, despite the somewhat muted final chapter of his time at the Camp Nou. The move allows Barcelona to reshape their attacking options and potentially invest in a younger forward.
