Robert Lewandowski will leave Barcelona when his contract expires at the end of the current season, the club confirmed on Saturday. The Polish striker informed the squad of his decision, bringing an end to his three-year spell at the Spotify Camp Nou.
The news was addressed at a pre-match press conference held by Barcelona manager Hansi Flick ahead of their La Liga fixture against Real Betis. Flick acknowledged the departure, stating it was “good for him, and maybe for the club” as Barcelona look to restructure their attacking options. He reflected on a successful working relationship with Lewandowski, spanning their time together in both Bavaria and Catalonia, praising the striker’s professionalism and dedication.
Lewandowski arrived at Barcelona in the summer of 2023 from Bayern Munich, quickly establishing himself as a key player. He finished as the club’s top scorer in his first two seasons, contributing significantly to their La Liga title win in 2024. However, his goalscoring output dipped slightly during the 2025-26 campaign, leading to speculation about his future. He has scored 44 goals in 102 appearances for the Catalan club.
Flick confirmed Lewandowski will start in his final match at the Spotify Camp Nou against Real Betis, acknowledging his deserving farewell. The manager also addressed the challenge of replacing a player of Lewandowski’s calibre, admitting it “will not be easy” to find a suitable replacement during the upcoming summer transfer window. Barcelona’s Director of Football has reportedly already begun exploring options, with links to forwards in the English Premier League emerging.
The departure of Lewandowski signals a potential shift in Barcelona’s attacking strategy as they aim to rebuild under Flick. The club will likely seek a younger, dynamic forward to lead the line, potentially investing heavily in the transfer market to secure a long-term solution. This move allows Barcelona to free up significant wages and potentially reinvest in other areas of the squad.
