Robert Lewandowski will depart Barcelona when his contract expires at the end of the current season, opting to pursue a new challenge despite being offered a renewal by the La Liga champions. The 37-year-old forward had an offer on the table from Barcelona, but ultimately decided to seek opportunities elsewhere after disagreements over contract terms.
Reports indicate that Barcelona stipulated any new deal for Lewandowski would require a significant wage reduction, alongside an acceptance of a reduced role in the squad, potentially as a second or third-choice striker. Negotiations stalled over the length of a potential contract, with Lewandowski requesting a two-year deal, while Barcelona were only willing to offer a one-year extension.
Although Lewandowski was prepared to compromise with a one-year contract including a second year contingent on performance-based objectives, Barcelona remained firm in their offer of a 12-month deal. This impasse led to both parties agreeing to separate at the end of the season, bringing an end to Lewandowski’s time at the Camp Nou.
According to Sport, Lewandowski is now heavily linked with a move to Saudi Arabian side Al Hilal. While he had previously received an offer from MLS club Chicago Fire, valued at €15 million per season, Al Hilal have significantly surpassed that with a proposed salary of €45 million annually. Lewandowski was reportedly receptive to joining Chicago Fire prior to the emergence of the Al Hilal offer.
Should he complete the transfer, Lewandowski would become the second Barcelona player in two seasons to move to Saudi Arabia, following Inigo Martinez’s switch to Al-Nassr in 2025. Barcelona manager Hansi Flick recently commented that the move could be beneficial for both Lewandowski and the club. Lewandowski himself stated that he felt his ‘mission’ at Barcelona was complete.
This move signals a shift in Barcelona’s attacking plans, likely prompting the club to seek a new forward in the upcoming transfer window. The substantial salary offered by Al Hilal represents a lucrative opportunity for Lewandowski to continue his career at a high level.
