Lille have formally denied reports linking defender Alexsandro with a move to newly promoted Premier League side Ipswich Town. Recent reports in English media suggested Ipswich had made an approach for the Brazilian centre-back, with preliminary discussions reportedly taking place between the two clubs. However, LOSC have stated unequivocally that no contact has been made.
“No club has contacted us. We are counting on Alexsandro, so it is not a topic,” a club spokesperson told L’Équipe. This statement effectively ends speculation surrounding a potential transfer, at least for the time being.
Alexsandro enjoyed a strong 2023-24 season before suffering a significant injury. He established himself as one of the leading Brazilian defenders in Ligue 1, but his campaign was cut short by a ruptured right quadriceps in September. The injury limited him to just 11 appearances across all competitions last season. He is currently under contract with Lille until 2028, suggesting the club retain a high regard for his abilities.
Upon his return from injury, Alexsandro will work under a familiar face in Davide Ancelotti, who has been appointed as Lille’s new head coach. Ancelotti is currently serving as an assistant coach to Carlo Ancelotti with the Brazilian national team during the Copa América tournament. The appointment of Ancelotti may further solidify Alexsandro’s position within the Lille squad, given their pre-existing relationship.
The denial from Lille indicates the club’s firm intention to keep Alexsandro as part of their long-term plans, despite his recent injury setback. His recovery and reintegration into the team will be crucial for Lille as they prepare for the upcoming Ligue 1 season.
