Lille are continuing negotiations with Nabil Bentaleb over a contract extension, club president Olivier Létang confirmed on Thursday. Bentaleb’s previous deal with the Ligue 1 side expired on June 30th, making him a free agent, but Lille are hopeful of retaining the Algerian international’s services. Létang described Bentaleb as “a child of Lille” and highlighted his personality as being aligned with the club’s values.
According to Létang, discussions with the 31-year-old midfielder took place as recently as two days prior to his public statement, suggesting active and ongoing negotiations. He indicated that a decision regarding Bentaleb’s future is expected imminently. The club president’s comments suggest a positive trajectory towards an agreement.
Bentaleb rejoined Lille in August 2022, initially on a short-term contract, after a period without a club following his departure from Schalke 04. He quickly established himself as a key player in Lille’s midfield, contributing significantly to their performances in both Ligue 1 and European competitions. Prior to his time in Germany, Bentaleb spent several years with Tottenham Hotspur, progressing through their academy and making over 60 Premier League appearances.
Lille have already seen Aïssa Mandi and Thomas Meunier depart after the expiration of their contracts, and retaining Bentaleb would represent a significant boost to their squad ahead of the new season. The club finished 5th in Ligue 1 last season, missing out on Champions League qualification, and will be aiming to improve on that performance. A renewed contract for Bentaleb would provide stability and experience to Lille’s midfield as they pursue their objectives. The potential extension could solidify Bentaleb’s long-term future with the club where he began his professional career.
