Liverpool could allow Cody Gakpo to leave during the summer transfer window, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano. The potential sale comes amid a period of change at Anfield following the unexpected sacking of manager Arne Slot and the subsequent appointment of Andoni Iraola.
Reports as early as March 21, as reported by TEAMtalk’s Graeme Bailey, suggested Liverpool were receptive to offers for the Netherlands international. While the club weren’t actively seeking to move Gakpo on, they were prepared to consider suitable proposals. Potential destinations identified at that time included Bayern Munich, Tottenham Hotspur, and Newcastle United, with Tottenham continuing to show interest according to Dutch media reports.
Gakpo himself has expressed disappointment at Slot’s departure, stating to ESPN that it was a “shame” given their recent qualification for the Champions League. He acknowledged the shock amongst the players and confirmed he had messaged Slot to thank him for the past two years. Virgil van Dijk, another Dutch international at Liverpool, also voiced his surprise at the decision, stating to Dutch News that he had spoken with Slot and his assistant, Sipke Hulshoff, and was grateful for their contributions.
Romano indicated on his YouTube channel that Liverpool’s willingness to consider Gakpo’s sale is linked to their need to strengthen the winger position, particularly following the departure of Mohamed Salah. He stated that if a “important proposal” arrives for the 27-year-old, the club will evaluate it. Liverpool are also actively pursuing other wingers, including Yan Diomande, potentially creating further competition for places. Gakpo joined Liverpool from PSV in January 2023 for a reported fee of £45 million, according to TNT Sports.
The situation suggests a potential reshaping of Liverpool’s attacking options under Iraola. The club’s pursuit of new wingers alongside the openness to selling Gakpo indicates a desire for fresh dynamism in wide areas. This could allow Iraola to implement his tactical vision and build a team capable of challenging for further silverware.
