Liverpool have agreed a deal to sign Osasuna winger Victor Munoz, triggering his £34million release clause, according to TEAMtalk. The move preempts Newcastle United’s long-standing interest in the Spanish player and is expected to be finalised quickly, with Munoz already agreeing terms on a six-year contract.
Newcastle had been heavily linked with Munoz for several weeks and were considered favourites to secure his signature, having made substantial progress in negotiations. However, Liverpool accelerated their pursuit after learning that Real Madrid would not be exercising their buy-back option on the 22-year-old.
Munoz has developed into a key player for Osasuna since leaving Real Madrid, earning a place in Spain’s World Cup squad through consistent performances. Liverpool’s sporting director, Richard Hughes, and the club’s recruitment team believe his versatility and tactical suitability align with the approach of new manager Andoni Iraola.
The Spaniard can play across the attacking line and in midfield, a quality Liverpool value, drawing comparisons to players like Marcus Tavernier and Justin Kluivert. Iraola’s preference for adaptable, hard-working forwards further influenced the decision to pursue Munoz.
Despite securing Munoz, Liverpool remain focused on signing a specialist right-winger, with RB Leipzig’s Yan Diomande identified as their primary target. However, Leipzig are demanding a fee exceeding €100million (£86.5m / $115.2m) and are attempting to tie Diomande to a new contract.
Paris Saint-Germain’s Bradley Barcola is also under consideration, with a potential link to the Diomande situation emerging. Should PSG succeed in signing Diomande, Barcola may become available, as he has reportedly informed the club of his desire for a new challenge. Liverpool are monitoring both situations closely.
Club officials are currently in the United States preparing Munoz for a medical examination, and the transfer is expected to be completed swiftly. For Newcastle, this represents a setback after significant investment in pursuing Munoz. Liverpool view the signing as a positive step towards strengthening their attacking options under Iraola.
