Liverpool are monitoring the situation of Tottenham Hotspur centre-back Micky van de Ven, with contract negotiations between the player and the club reportedly stalled. The development comes as Liverpool seek to bolster their defensive options following Ibrahima Konate’s move to Real Madrid.
Liverpool have already secured a deal for Victor Munoz and are also pursuing other targets, including winger Yan Diomande, though his transfer is currently delayed due to an agency dispute. The club are also in the market for central midfielders and additional centre-backs, making Van de Ven a key target.
According to Dutch source De Telegraaf, Van de Ven’s representatives are refusing to comment on the impasse in contract talks, leaving the reasons for the delay unclear. This represents a significant shift, as a new contract for the 25-year-old appeared to be a formality just months ago. Tottenham have been active in strengthening their defence this summer, bringing in Andy Robertson from Liverpool, Marcos Senesi from Bournemouth, and Jan Paul van Hecke from Brighton for a reported €60m.
Tottenham’s recent investment in defence, coupled with their pursuit of Sandro Tonali from Newcastle for a fee of €120m, suggests the club may need to generate funds through player sales. Van de Ven, whose Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) is currently €73.5m, is considered a potential candidate to leave the club.
Van de Ven’s potential move to Liverpool would address a long-term need in the centre of defence. While Virgil van Dijk remains a key figure, the club is looking for a player who can eventually succeed him. At 25, Van de Ven is entering his prime and already has three years of Premier League experience. He would provide an immediate impact, unlike the younger defenders already at Anfield, Giovanni Leoni and Jeremy Jacquet. Former Brighton manager Roberto De Zerbi recently lauded Van de Ven as “the best centre back in the Premier League” in May, highlighting his quality and potential.
