Liverpool have been informed that a deal for Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton is achievable, though manager Andoni Iraola’s preference remains a key factor, according to Liverpool FC specialist journalist David Lynch. The potential transfer comes amid a summer of inflated prices for midfielders, following Elliot Anderson’s £116m move to Manchester City which has impacted the market.
Liverpool are currently prioritizing a replacement for Mohamed Salah following his departure, but there is a growing belief within the club that bolstering the midfield with more energy is also necessary to facilitate Iraola’s high-tempo style of play. Lynch revealed on the Anfield Index podcast that the club has “liked” Wharton for some time and has a “good relationship” with his agent.
However, securing Wharton, valued at £70m, hinges on Crystal Palace’s willingness to sell. Lynch stated, “It’s all about what Crystal Palace want.” He also questioned whether Iraola views Wharton as a suitable fit, noting that former manager Arne Slot would have likely pursued the player if a spot had been available.
To create space in the squad and potentially fund a move for Wharton, Liverpool may need to sanction departures. Curtis Jones and Alexis Mac Allister have been identified as potential candidates, though securing the right offers will be crucial. Inter Milan are expected to revisit their interest in Jones, while Mac Allister has been linked with Real Madrid despite a disappointing season at Anfield. The Reds are also monitoring other midfield options, including a Japanese player and Ayyoub Bouaddi, but rising prices across the Premier League are proving a challenge.
Wharton, 20, has established himself as a key player for Crystal Palace, demonstrating composure and passing range in a deeper midfield role. A move to Liverpool would offer him the chance to compete at the highest level and potentially feature in the Champions League.
