Liverpool are exploring a potential swap deal with Crystal Palace that would see Harvey Elliott move to Selhurst Park in exchange for Adam Wharton, according to journalist Danny Gallagher. The development comes as new Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola assesses his squad, with Elliott’s future at Anfield uncertain.
Liverpool’s primary focus remains on replacing Mohamed Salah, but strengthening the midfield is also a priority for owners Fenway Sports Group. Wharton has been a long-term target for the club, and the proposed swap deal represents a potentially cunning strategy to secure his signature. Elliott spent the 2025/26 season on loan at Aston Villa, however, the obligatory buy clause in his loan deal was not triggered.
While Iraola is still evaluating Elliott’s role within the team, the possibility of a swap deal has emerged. Gallagher reported on X that Liverpool are “looking into the logistics” of the move, noting it could progress quickly if all parties reach an agreement. This follows recent reports suggesting Liverpool may have cooled their initial interest in Wharton.
However, Crystal Palace are reportedly holding firm on their valuation of Wharton, seeking a fee of £70 million. Palace want Wharton to become their record sale, exceeding the £68 million received from Arsenal for Eberechi Eze. Sources indicate Palace are in a strong negotiating position, with Wharton under contract and other potential midfield targets securing moves elsewhere.
Recent commentary from journalist Pete O’Rourke suggested Iraola’s arrival at Liverpool might diminish the club’s pursuit of Wharton, given the Spaniard’s differing tactical preferences from previous managers. Nevertheless, Liverpool appear determined to explore all avenues to acquire the 22-year-old England international. A successful deal would provide Iraola with a key midfield addition, while potentially offering Elliott a more prominent role at Crystal Palace.
