Liverpool are monitoring Lutsharel Geertruida, currently on loan at Sunderland from RB Leipzig, with a view to a potential summer move, though they face significant competition from several other Premier League clubs. According to TEAMtalk, Liverpool initially expressed interest in signing the versatile Netherlands international during the January transfer window and remain keen to secure his services ahead of next season.
Geertruida, 25, is capable of playing as a right-back, centre-back, and defensive midfielder, a flexibility that appeals to manager Arne Slot, who previously worked with the player at Feyenoord. Dutch journalist Valentijn Driessen believes Geertruida could thrive at Anfield under Slot, stating that the coach’s familiarity with the player could be crucial to his success. Driessen acknowledged that Geertruida has struggled to establish himself at both Leipzig and Sunderland, but suggested Slot’s guidance could unlock his potential.
Sunderland have an option to make Geertruida’s loan deal permanent for a fee of £20 million in the summer of 2026. However, his performances this season, having made 29 appearances for the Black Cats, have attracted attention from multiple clubs. Tottenham Hotspur, Aston Villa, Everton, Leeds United, and Crystal Palace are all reportedly tracking the Dutch defender.
Leeds United may have an advantage in the pursuit due to their connection with the Red Bull football network, of which RB Leipzig is a part. TEAMtalk’s transfer insider, Graeme Bailey, reports that communication lines regarding Geertruida’s future remain open between the two clubs. Leeds are expected to strengthen their defence this summer, and Geertruida’s profile aligns with their long-term recruitment strategy. Sources indicate that Geertruida is ‘increasingly expected to become available’ for a permanent move away from Leipzig when his loan at Sunderland concludes.
