Liverpool are in a ‘strongest position’ to agree a deal for RB Leipzig winger Yan Diomande, according to David Ornstein of The Athletic. The potential transfer, which is currently in the club-to-club negotiation phase, could make the 19-year-old the third most expensive signing in Liverpool’s history.
Liverpool have identified Diomande as a potential long-term successor to Mohamed Salah, whose future at Anfield remains a subject of speculation. Despite Leipzig’s desire to retain the Ivory Coast international for at least another season, a ‘blockbuster’ offer could prompt them to reconsider. Paris Saint-Germain are also interested in Diomande, but Ornstein reports that Liverpool have progressed further in discussions regarding personal terms.
Leipzig are currently demanding a fee ‘in excess’ of €130m (£112m) for Diomande, a significant increase from the previously reported €100m (£86m). While Liverpool may be hesitant to meet this higher valuation, PSG are also not expected to overspend to secure the player. Ornstein notes that PSG’s background work on the deal is not as advanced as Liverpool’s, and they have yet to initiate direct talks with Leipzig.
Should Diomande join Liverpool, he would become their third-most expensive signing, behind only Florian Wirtz (£116m including add-ons) and Alexander Isak (£125m). The Athletic’s analyst, Seb Stafford-Bloor, highlighted Diomande’s exceptional speed and two-footed ability as key attributes, noting he was measured as the fifth-quickest player in the Bundesliga this season. Stafford-Bloor believes Diomande possesses the potential to become a constant threat to opposing defenses, capable of changing speed quickly and beating defenders on either flank.
Securing Diomande would represent a significant investment in Liverpool’s attacking future, providing Arne Slot with a dynamic and versatile option on the wing. The competition for his signature remains intense, but Liverpool’s proactive approach has placed them in a favorable position to land the highly-rated youngster.
